CYCLISTS OFTEN bemoan the fact that due to the hoggish behaviour of other road users they take their lives into their hands every time they mount up. They should try the downhill track at the Nevis Range where every trip has the possibility of ending in traction. Of all the ways of getting down a mountainside, by bike has to be one of the most daft and yet also one of the most exhilarating.
The Scottish Downhill Association is holding races at the Nevis Range this weekend and World Champion cyclists Steve Peat and Tracy Moseley are scheduled to compete. Most of the competitors will get down the track in around six minutes while the champs are expected to complete the three-kilometre plunge in about four minutes. Built for comfort rather than speed, your correspondent cycled the track once and only fell off ten or 11 times. It took me a quarter of an hour to get down. The efforts of Peat and Moseley will make for more exciting spectating and if you fancy trying the sport yourself then a day pass for the gondola to the top of the track is £19.
