Why is it called Butter Mountain?
Irish NPS round 4(E2) & 4x race Butter Mountain, Blessington, Co Wicklow.

Well only 2 weeks after Jamie Popam did a nice job of breaking his ankle in 3 rock here we were at the next round of the NPS at Butter Mountain (don’t ask) in Wicklow. Ok I saw the track back in March before most of it was finished and was impressed at how much effort the lads put into the track even at that stage. Come Saturday morning I was faced with getting used to yet another bike while everyone else was getting to grips with the track, all 3 minutes of it. Quote of the weekend about the track was from AL from AB Racing…” would be a nice track if the hill had another 500 foot on it” or maybe from Aodh when I asked him if he was racing,” I am in China!” It was fast and flowed well but on a whole it was one long pedal all the way down, fitness was key (fcek that’s me out so then). Better than last years track but pedally none the less. Of course Greg, Rory and Tom were complaining but they always do!

Ok track run down… start in the heather, nice bit of single track in the dry, pretty nasty in the rain and gales on Sunday, then into the forest, fast loads of line choice and a lot of small drops there coz a tree fell there! Into the tight forest, different story, all real sticky mud, no grip and off camber, didn’t meet a rider that did not crash there! From there onto the fire road, bit of a slog up to the 2 bus stops and sprint round the third to hit the gap jump, bout 20foot that you do not wanna come short on believe me.

After that you have a nice bit of tight sprinty single track, mind that stump on the tight left, nice left right combo, over the “rock garden” and out into the field, round the tree, don’t slide out like Rory or me in our race runs into the bomb hole over one more jump and sprint to the finish if you can.

Ok to the results… U-14’s was won by Christy Brown 2nd I dunno and 3rd again for Jason Murphy from Kerry.

U-16’s again I know none of em but young Wolfe won in a time that should have him in the world cup next year but he cant race because he’s only 15!

Next the old lads...Won by another lad from the north, Banana man 2nd and Aran Carson with another 3rd.

Now the older lads, Won by Tom Clogher, with Peter Popam in 2nd not sure who came 3rd.

Oh Michelle won the ladies again

In the seniors it was Rory O’Keefe taking the win from Niall Egan and James O’Carroll

Juniors was won again by Descent-Worlds/ 24/7’s Greg O’Keefe with the 2nd fastest time of the day, 2nd went to Darren Quille I think 3rd not sure

In the Elites, Ben Reid came, saw and ran away with a stunning win. Fastest time by 5 seconds with 3 minutes flat, Glyn 2nd on his 4x bike (by choice, as I said pedally track)

The 4x… well tricky didn’t show up after last year I cant blame him… anyway the track started up on the steepest part of the hill with a set of triples, trick was to pump the first and jump the rest. Into the left hand berm, step up right hand berm into a step down into Double into left hand berm down and hit the wall, oops I mean the step up, round the last right hander and of a small drop to finish. Very Technical steep 4x course. Overall a good scary course that saw some good racing.

... and the results

1st Glyn O’Brien
2nd Steve McClintock
3rd Mark Nugent
4th Ben Reid

Ok scandal!

Why was Tom Power going around with a Quilt round his shoulders? Who was abusing the van drivers? More mini bikes showing up, Pop tart and Niall Davis spent most of sat night checking up the websites, Glyn’s one was NUTS, racing the Smith Bro’s he went round the pole 3 times and still beat’em up the hill again. He also raced the DH on his 4X bike. Quote from Paulo.. “of course he’s styling it, he’s hardly doing it for the aerodynamics!” Why was foxy Wolfe looking for a syringe on Saturday? What about the lad racing on the hard tail with street tyres being held back 20 seconds for not having his lid done up! Oh and no E2 racing in Ireland next year, just cant make it pay. That’s all for now.

You should find the full results and more scandal on www.rebelracing.org and www.braydownhill.com now we have another month to wait till the next batch of races in October speaking of which check out www.021racing.com for the entry forms for Mallow, till then
