Al, I can see your house from here!!!
Round 3 Irish NPS, 3rock mountain, Dublin. 8th August 04
Words: Richard (big man) Thornhill Pics: Victor Lucas

Ok after being ignored for long enough I said I would take charge and give Jon-e no excuse not to have Irish DH reports on the site, I'm already doing pieces for and a local paper, whats another 1? So here I go if ye don’t know the names or places, get over here and find out!

Well after a break of a month since the last Irish DH race in Dunmanway here we go again with the E2/NPS race in 3rock in Dublin.

The fact that it’s an E2 event and marshals are hard to come by meant there was no Saturday practice. Anyway arrived at the track at about 9.30 to see Jamie Popham just heading off for a practice run. Next time I saw him was when he was being carried away into the ambulance with a football-sized ankle! More on that later….

Ben Reid

Now down to the track, despite having the top half of the track cancelled by Coillte (Irish forestry service) there was still enough to test most riders. Start and hang a right down a short firebreak section, right into the forest, which set the theme for the next minute, rooty, greasy and rocky with a few blind corners and lots of line choice, jump out of the forest, jump off the two north shore drops to clear the mud holes at the bottom of the ramp and into that section. A 20foot double with a short landing just before a load of random head sized rocks and then over the lip of the chute, another rough rock fest this time it was just much steeper at about 45degrees (ish, pretty steep anyway), which claimed most riders at some stage. Down that and round the 3 big open corners that had you drifting both wheels in the wet, drop off the ditch and round the final corner.

Glyn O'Brien
Junior Podium
Elite Podium

Now back to Pophams crash, yes you guessed it, over shot the landing, while the forks were still compressing hit a rock and went ass over tits down the chute while still clipped in to his Devil Pedals!!! (I’m a flats man, can you tell?) The next crash there was much worse to look at, pretty much the same thing but he made it down the chute with only 1 bounce onto the pile of rocks on the left. The next one was during the race, which had riders waiting for an hour at the top while they scraped your man off the ground after going over the bars into the boulders we had just cleared after Pophams crash on the right. All that was left was pieces of his body armour in the ferns to the side. So i'm assuming Steve Peat wasn’t the only rider to do his collarbone this weekend!

So, back to the racing…

Ok in the elites Descent-worlds Ben Reid took the honours and the fastest time of the day from Cove’s Glyn O’Brien and team Munster’s Tom Power who had a storming run.

In Juniors it was another Descent –World rider this time from the Peoples Republic of Cork, Greg O’Keefe taking the win and 10th place overall and his first UCI point. Can’t remember who came 2nd but it was Andy Sweeny on the Ancillotti in 3rd. (cheers for the lift lad).

Next up is the super tough senior class where AB Racings Niall Egan came saw and ran off with first place on his local track. 2nd place went to ‘s Keith Brock in 2nd with Greg’s older Bro Rory O’Keefe in 3rd.

Going on to the old men banana man Carl Young finished in 3rd behind two lads from the north, no idea of who they are they just show up.

To the older men in vets it was Tom Clogher on his trek taking the honours from _________ just in front of Pat Maginn in 3rd.

To the U-16’s ive no idea check up the results on or during the week.

The U-14’s saw Team Munster’s Jason Murphy in a suspicious 3rd behind 2 dubs (it’s a fix, I tells ya it’s a fix!!!)

Ok just a few more random occurring’s from the race, watch out for Lawler and his “lighter” Ben Reid got caught rotten trying to light the stove with it. Not telling what happened. Why did I do my race run chainless (mental note, gotta get me a descent bike ASAP) how many times did lockers cross the line? How many people crashed off the 2nd north shore? Or the chute for that matter? How many are going around with a cold today from the rain? Where was Colin Ross? Where was Dave Egan? He has a bike after Morzine this time. How nice is Stevo’s foes? Why did it take an hour to get that lad out of the way during the race? Mini bike fever has hit Ireland but what the hell was Ben on? Looks like a mini chopper! Why, seeing as he is sponsored by giant was he on yet another 5year old ATX? Who was last home, Dennis from Cork or the boys from Kerry? Both being about 4/5hour drives (not as bad as my trip of 9hours from the race in Derry though, it was pretty much the length of Ireland!)

Ok next weekend is the 4x race in Moneyscalp, and the week after is the next round of the NPS on Butter Mountain, another E2 event which should be a very fast, long track if memory serves me right. Oh and there’s a 4x race there on the Saturday as well. Cant wait to see that gap jump on the dh course, mental.

Ok websites to check out are or for the results, news and gossip.

And don’t forget for the pictures.
