Eurofighter Part 5 - the Final Word?

It feels as though you have just settled in, got to know the other locals, found your favourite trails- and then the end of August is here and it is time to pack it all up again!

The second half of August means a gradual wind down of riders coming into town on holiday. This brings with it the bonus of less riders on the trails, but the main tracks are really starting to show signs of wear and tear- the choice you have to make for a late season holiday.

The North Shore trails over towards Chatel are STILL sprouting new lines- a new rickety suspension style bridge to rock ride to rock drop is another line to catch your eye and the development is really ongoing. This looks to be the future direction of that hill and I can’t wait until next season to see what is on the cards.

More wood than you can shake a stick at...

For some reason that escapes me, they shut the Super Morzine lift on the last weekend of August, so our liaison to Morgins and Chatel is cut off - but Morgins and Chatel remain open! Stupid if you ask me and it means a long drive if you want to head over that way. Otherwise it is the Pleney and Les Gets to play on. There are new lines that run in and out of the main downhill run now that mean you can pretty much stay off the main track if you so wish. I decided this might be the way to go after having my front wheel swallowed axel deep by a braking bump (MID BERM!) but I know of enough guys who like the track still and rip it up all day long.

With riders concentrated on the Pleney and in Les Gets there are more people to bump into. James Hughes was out for an end of season week sporting a very trick looking D –ZIGN custom sprayed Troy Lee D2. ‘Sex Pest’ in Sex Pistols font on one side, Hughes on the other, and Playboy bunnies all over. Maybe not the one to rip out of the box as it comes back from the painters and go ‘MUM, check it out- what do you think?’ but pretty cool. (Alas I didn’t have a camera on me when I saw it).

New Neighbours
John the night porter

After reporting on the thefts in town I am gutted to say that my chalet was done over last week. Some scum bags broke into the garage by crow-barring the locked door and after bolt cropping a lock made off with 4 bikes, helmets, pads and a toolbox. They must have been ninjas or something as 2 of the lads fell asleep on the sofas literally above the garage and weren’t woken at all. This photo was taken just before we hit the hay and must have been less than 2 hours before we were robbed (Well, that box of wine might have had something to do with un-broken slumber John!) The ensuing police dealings were a real hassle and due to some of the guys not having travel or bike insurance I have been accused of ‘negligence’ and they are trying to sue me for their bikes being nicked! Cheers for that. I won’t even start to go there…

Whilst most eyes were on Livingo for the World Champs last weekend, James McKnight and crew headed down the valley to a local race just outside Samoens. From their accounts it was a top course- 5m30secs long on average and from the impressive trophies on display they obviously showed ‘em how it was done. Good going boys.

Auntie Ang was hosting a Hen party last week and our ‘Staff member of the year’ Dan the man was on hand to impress the girls and give them what they’ve always wanted. I think he enjoyed himself and his rendition of the ‘Top Gun’ tune left the girls at his mercy. We were scared they had eaten him alive but he was still smiling as he crawled out of bed at about 3pm…

You never close your eyes... The Righteous Dan
Dan - Hangover ride?
...post hangover ride!

It was interesting to see the results from the World Champs and look down the list to see who has spent time in Morzine this summer- it is the place to tune up for competition and with continued pressure over the winter months from the bike club the trails and infrastructure for us riders will hopefully continue to improve and develop for next season.

Well, with the other companies’ staff packing their bags and leaving for their winter residence it is getting quieter and there is less gear, bikes and trail news to report. I guess that is another season in the books and for me it is back to the reality of Birmingham and its less glamorous training grounds for a winter of training MX Fitness riders.

Roll on ’06.

Alan
