Saturday evening saw Carl Davison and his Northern Downhill (NDH) team targeting new racers with a “Funduro” race at Hamsterley Forest in Durham. Hamsterly is a forest with trails that really do cater for all – from family cycle tracks, through to classic trail centre laps and some short, but full on DH tracks frequented by a certain former World Champion, Danny Hart.

The NDH normal enduros have a mix of trail centre trails and super technical and steep stages that can put to test many competent riders abilities. This funduro used all the best red graded trails around Hamsterley (minus the top section of transmission due to evening light restrictions ) – this ensured that the trails were rideable by all abilities but Red trails can also provide a good physical challenge to even the best riders .
Mark Knighton, his first competitive enduro coming in at a very cool 4th place! Kudos!
The majority of the trails were dry and dusty gravel trails, but certain sections boasted some great steeper singletrack and more natural trails that we all love to ride.
Jamie Wood negotiating the steeper natural single track Boneshaker stage (St 2)
The format of the event was an afternoon practice loop starting at 3.00pm, followed by the race starting at 5.45pm. The race itself consisted of 7 stages, all known well to the locals as Section 13, Boneshaker, Special K, Brain Freeze, Pikes Teeth, route666/Oddsox and finally Accelerator/Nitrous. The total distance normally around 8-9 miles, so an accessible distance to more novice riders.
Susannah taking on the steeper boneshaker stage, another rider taking on a first competitive race.
The fastest time of the day was Brett Penfold in 19-29 category in a cool 8:24.93, Joe Young coming in 18.99s after. The fastest of the women was Jenny Nuttall in a very good 10:44.03, followed by Laura Richer 35.59s behind.
Tom Hardy coming in 1st place in the 14-18s. Rides for Scouting for Trails and this lad knows how to style it up!
The next event for NDH will be a TT in Weardale’s Eastgate – as Carl states “This is NDH’s Trail bike TT 2 race at Eastgate in the Wear Valley of County Durham . For those of you that have not raced down huge grass fields you really need to check it out! This hill also has lots of natural fun shapes.” A downhill style race for a mere £29…….who can refuse! Heres the link to get entered!
Stephen Hardy also riding for Scouting for Trails came in 2nd in the 40-49.
As Always a big shout out to Start Cycles and Orange for their support, and to all the marshals who braved the summer midgies on a fine and warm summers evening.
Joe Young, very often seen competing in Carl’s races came in 2nd in the 19-29s
Thomas Lloyd came in 1st place by a comfortable 33s in the 30-39s
Thanks to Jerry Tatton for the report – make sure you hunt him out and say hello at any events. He’s there grabbing killer shots week in week out amongst midges for you all!
