The jumps are called, “Dream Track”. The piles of dirt, spaced way, way apart are a landmark of the mountain bike scene in Queenstown, New Zealand, and have quickly become the benchmark for big, fun jumps. The first two and last two gaps are the most noteworthy, but this story only involves the former. It is here at the top of the Wynyard Jump Park where the second-annual gathering of huckers has taken place, with the set goal in mind of crowning the year’s title holder of, Whip World Champion. Organized by Jake Hood, a familiar face here at Descent World, and local sending machine, Emmerson Wilken, the event was seamless and rad. Tunes were cranking through a proper sound system, there were multiple categories and accompanying prizes, and it managed to get squeezed in around questionable Autumn weather. Without further delay, take a look at how the evening went. Spoiler: sideways…….

Descent World, Mountain Biking

These tucked whips by Kim Newton were dialed right from the start. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

The hip provides a nice run into the step-up, and riders seem fond of dropping some leg swag along the way. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

This isn't a whip, but Oscar Spicoli's attire needs as much exposure as possible. #highfashion @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Daniel Snape made sure to wear occasion-appropriate clothes. #buttonupswag @zachfaulkner

Conor McFarlane won best trick on the evening, to no one's surprise. @cwoodphoto

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Reppin' for the women, Ronja Hill-Wright sent it start-to-finish during the OUWOWC. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Ronja Hill-Wright is on the rise in the Women's Pro DH world, and it's no surprise because she can huck with the best of 'em. @cwoodphoto

Descent World, Mountain Biking

If there is any doubt about Joel Tunbridge getting back nintey, let that be put to rest with this shot; backwards. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

A driving force in the riding community and the other person behind this year's event, Emmerson Wilken is a humble hucker with a deep bag of tricks. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

The guy in plaid is in focus, and that is helpful because as the tallest person there, he adds some scale to the height of the riders. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

The crowd was a cool mix of riders, friends, family, and people of all ages who just like to get among it. Whip are for the people. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

When you're sending it for an evening, keeping hydrated is a priority - Flo demonstrates. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

If you don't konw, now you do: Flo De Vries is an savage on any bike. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

I think this is why yoga has become so popular among riders this year...how else do you pretzel into this kind of whip? @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Conor McFarlane paying tribute to Jeremy McGrath with this panned nac-nac. @cwoodphoto

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Jake, ever stylish. @cwoodphoto

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Obligatory panshot of the hip jump, Kim Newton lays it over. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

The One Tonne Man, Russ Paver, styling out over the hip. @cwoodphoto

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Shooting Oscar Perk proved challenging because you were never sure if he was going to jump out of frame or not. The boost is strong wth this one. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

The attendance for this year's event was solid, considering it was postponed once and the rescheduled event was last minute. Queenstown knows how to rally! @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Adam Lynsky, hanging it out over the hip. @cwoodphoto

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Lynsky, doing what he does best. @cwoodphoto

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Hunter Paull is someone to watch in the next couple of years. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Kids these days...Hunter reminding parents everythere that buying video games is a waste of money. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Hunter was making it look easy. Here, he and Kenji Yamada throw some synchronized shapes. @cwoodphoto

Reon is a jack-of-all-trades on and off the bike, so it's no surprise he can whip this well. @cwoodphoto

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Joel puts on a demonstration every time he rides. @cwoodphoot

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Even blacked out, Joel "Runga" Tunbridge is recognizable by his style alone. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

We were never acquainted, but this hucker on a flossed out Zerode was putting in some serious airmiles. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

We all were able to get a good look at this rider's drive train as he cruised by. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

We all were able to get a good look at this rider's drive train as he cruised by. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Max Bruneau is a big of a legend around the hills, and hanging off the back of the bike like this shows why. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

If there is one guy on a bike who will "wow" the crowd on everyone run, it's Adam Lynsky. The loosestl; the wildest; he's the real deal. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

This year's Oceania's champion, Bryn Dickerson, was getting sideways and then some. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Jeff Spicoli or Oscar Perks? Either way, the flouro-clad sender was boosting so high, it was like Fast Times. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

If you don't know who Max Warshawsky is, you're missing out. The quiet Aussie is on the rise, and hucking his wheels into squares in the process. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Jake has been perfecting the whip all season long, and it seemed he finally found the magic ingredients just in time for the OUWWC. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

FInding a good perspective to show how sideways everyone gets is not hard, because the action speaks for itself. Kim finding parallel. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

In terms of quality, this photo is terrible. However, the moment it captures is too good to pass up: Adam Lynsky only learned flips on the big bike a few weeks ago, and this is the first time he had ever flipped the step-up - as you can see by crowd reactions (and my terrible camera work), no one was ready for it, except Adam. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

The "Stomped It" Haka. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

The third and final run of the Top 5 was a wicked train of insanity, and the riders all grouped around to revel in the evening. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Mates and whips is what it's all about! L to R: Max; Bryn; Kim; Gareth; ilabb; Hunter. @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Your 2016 Offical Unofficial Whip Off World Champion, Joel "Runga" Tunbridge! Kim Newton in 2nd, and Jake Hood in 3rd. It was a tight competition, and one helluva show! @zachfaulkner

Descent World, Mountain Biking

Once the Top 5 were announced and set to run, we alll knew things were getting tuned up to 11. Runga swung this one out well past parallel and the crowd lost their minds. This was the winning effort. @zachfaulkner
