All too soon it seems like winter is starting to muscle summer out of the way with the colder, darker mornings. It just seemed like yesterday the first round of the Vertigo Summer Series took place and we had all the daylight to play with in the world.
The finals have now become a customary fancy dress affair. Typically to make it easy (or not) you only have to dress up your helmet. As usual the Queenstown locals embraced the challenge as there were some awesome prizes up for grabs for the best helmet. Local company Shotover Canyon Swing put up a voucher for their new flying fox product combined with their original canyon swing too.
These guys are awesome at what they do and give you a really personal experience with your trip, while trying to scare the shit out of you too!
The track used for the finals was “Original” from the mid way point in the Queenstown Bike Park. This trail has been redesigned in recent years and is an awesome flow style trail now with berms, jumps and woops. It was the perfect trail to close the season finale on.
Being fancy dress and the finals no one was taking the timed run seriously, which is what we aim for. This round was all about having fun, embracing the fancy dress and standing out in the challenge at the start of the times run.
The finals challenge was to do a drawing of your choice on a piece of corflute and then get your photo taken in through the vertigo photo frame. It was made clear that the best picture and photo was going to be winning the prizes tonight, so it was worth losing some time on the race run to take your time on the drawing and photo!
The photos and pictures speak for themselves, good times were had and people embraced the whole idea with open arms!
Helmet designs were a real mixed affair, some were last minute designs and some people spent a good bit of time creating some brilliant origin designs are were awarded for it later at prize giving!
The best helmet was voted for by the rest of the riders in the bar. The best 6 were summoned up and then the biggest cheer won the coveted Shotover Canyon Swing combo and a set of 100% goggles.
The finalists included a helmet with a full plated meal with wine on it, a dragon, some sort of dark ninja gimp, go pro man and endure specific helmet man with lots of tool and accessories strapped to his helmet!
The winner on the night went to the crowds favourite which was the dark face ninja gimp mask of Nic Niko, who got the biggest cheer from the crowd at the bar and took him the prizes!
It has been an awesome series this year, it goes from strength to strength every year. A massive thanks has to go to everyone that helped, the awesome Vertigo Bikes staff, the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, Skyline, Lonestar and 100%. Looking forward to next year already.
