661 Gravity Enduro Series Launched

Downhill is still my first love when it comes to mountain bikes, and it’s still what keeps me most interested as a fan, but fact is, it’s not what I enjoy doing myself when I am out riding, I still ride for the buzz on the downs, but I’d rather get myself to the top than rely on tractors and trailers these days. I know I’m not alone, and clearly so do the trio behind the new 661 Gravity Enduro Series– Steve Parr, David “Tally” Tallontire and Craig Erskine. The Avalanche Cup guys have dabbled with a couple of races here and there in recent years, the Kona Mash Up has tried, and ultimately mashed up the format with a complicated format and even more complicated timing system but Steve, Tally & Craig are the first to put together a full series using the format.

You know it’s going to be good, between the three of them they have a wealth of experience putting on races, uplift days, designing courses and of course riding themselves, so they should have a pretty good idea of what we want. Add to that a cracking set of venues stretching the length of the country and an impressive array of sponsors giving support and presumably a few prizes, it looks to be a cracker!

Enduro racing is the latest form of mountain bike racing in the UK, it all began in Europe with many British riders competing in these events. The demand for this kind of racing is huge and has resulted in a number of one off events taking place around the country. This is the first national enduro series, In 2011 we will take enduro to the next level with accurate timing, industry supported pit area and prizes for everyone not just the winners

Enduro racing is a cross country based event and is normally run on an existing red route cross country loop. The event is run like a stage rally event where each rider has to complete a set amount of stages, most of the timed stages will be downhill but some will have uphill sections. Each event will consist of five competitive stages where you will be set off as an individual with a gap between each rider. At the end of each stage you will ride on a non-timed section to get to the next stage, this will involve riding uphill. The times for the link sections will be very generous so you don’t have to ride quick on these sections, you will have time to take it easy. The rider with the quickest overall time for the 5 timed stages will win their category. Each stage will be electronically timed with manual backup. The final stage will have live timing with a results screen in the pit area, this means there will be no waiting around to find out your results.

In 2011 we are running five events spread across the UK which will make up the series. Four rounds will count towards the series so therefore if you enter all rounds you will drop your lowest place finish. This event is for everyone whether you are aiming for the top step of the podium or you just want a weekend away with your friends. This is your chance to ride some of the top trails in the country with some of the top riders in the country.

At each round of the series you will get:

2 full days riding your bike
Saturday – open practice on the race route & a seeding run on one of the stages close to the pit area (The purpose of seeding is to put you in order for Sundays race day)
Sunday – Sunday is race day. The race day will include 5 competitive stages which are electronically timed and manually backed up. An enduro event has never been timed to the level in the UK before.
First aid will be on site all weekend covering all stages

There will be prizes for the top 3 in each category along with spot prizes from some of the biggest names in the mountain bike industry. These prizes include riding holidays to the Riviera and the French Alps, everyone is in with a chance of winning.

Aside from racing the SixSixOne Gravity Enduro offers a packed pit area which has:

Trade stands
Tech/Service area
Demo rides for family/friends while you are racing
Free camping for everyone
Each rider will also receive a copy of Singletrack magazine
