Ride, shower, eat, sleep……..
Well…I think everyone’s either been to, planning to go, or perhaps right now actually reading this from a mountain bike holiday destination, and by that, I mean a hired chalet in France, Villa in Spain, hotel in Canada or even a 5 day rather crowded and smelly static caravan in Glen Nevis. Point being that for the most part, MTB’ers that even semi-serious about their riding, all aspire to take that trip abroad to either race, hone their skills or just for the craic!
On this website, we’ve reviewed and commented on a few different operators like T2R, Riders retreat etc, mostly offering self catering chalet style accommodation in a style that has never seemed to break through in the UK, but one brave soul has stuck his head above the parapet and gone all Five star on us, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Robbie Belshaw and “Trailab”
The Trailab project is the brainchild of one Robbie Belshaw, a thoroughly approachable well travelled veteran of the bike trade, who saw a gap in the market that has never yet been exploited at this level in the UK, a Five star, full on mountain bike holiday experience, the likes of which you have to experience before you shuffle off this rock.
Location is everything as far as riding is concerned, and the Trailab house is perfect in that respect. 2 miles north of Fort William is Torlundy, and nestled just off the road is the aforementioned bungalow. Just 1 mile from the Nevis Range by the mail road, 100 yards from the Witches trail XC course, 2 miles off-road to the Nevis range car park and within a half hour of Laggan, it’s perfectly poised to offer quick access to these and other amazing MTB locations.
I can’t really say enough about the set-up, it can be rented as a group or you can take your chance to be bunked up with whoever happens to be there, but either way, you’ll wish you could stay longer. The house has a huge studio lounge cum-kitchen affiar with all mod cons, a dining area and spacious kicked back lounge. Amongst the stuff provided in this room is Sky TV, a cupboard full of DVD,s a Playstation again with loads of games all offered up on a 42″ flat screened TV. Leather sofa’s, comfy carpets and panoramic views of Ben Nevis and Nevis Range are also the order of the day in this room. I have to add that If had the means, I’d have decorated my own house almost exactly like this!
Anyway…..Four bedrooms, All en-suite with an extra mega power shower in the washing, cum changing room, oh and did I mention the washing machine? Also, outside there’s a provided gas barbecue on the decking and secure storage for your bikes. By the time you read this there will be also be a fully equipped workshop with provision to tinker with your steed shoud the need arise.
As if this doesn’t sound good enough already, you have the option of the Trailab guys picking up your shopping list for the week, doing your washing and…oh, did I mention the phone and free wireless internet access? Anyway I’m sure you get the impression now that we enjoyed our stay, it instantly felt like home and the welcome we received was outstanding. Did I say it came complete with a basket of local produce to start us on our way? no….Christ, this article is becoming a parody of itself! I guess there’s only so many points I can make towards the scale of what’s offered at Trailab without ACTUALLY doing a sales job.
We all know that most seasoned riders prefer to go it alone for the most part, but it’s worth mentioning that the guys also offer a few different packages for biking holidays with shuttle services to outlying trail centres, lunches, guides and all the trimmings.
So here goes….If you cant afford to go abroad this year and want to experience the best trails in all discipline’s that the UK has to offer, then you need to be in the Fort William area, If you are in the Fort William area and don’t live there, you’ll need somewhere to stay, and If this is the case then visit www.trailab.com or call Robbie on +44 (0) 777 317 7223 and treat yourself to a stay at Trailab. All rates and services can be found on the website.
Oh, and when you call, mention descent-world. It opens all kinds of doors!
