POC – Body Armour
Those crazy Swedes are always up to something, if it’s not building some of the craziest trails for the summer riding season then it’s busting big moves on their boards and skis come winter time. Right now when I think of Sweden, the POC name always comes to mind…if you’ve been locked away in a cupboard then this might be your first encounter.
We just got a up a heads up on their 2010 range and well is looks great…protection at it’s best. Here’s the limbs selection for you to have a look at and maybe you be thinking more about all this kit very soon.
Better body protection
In our work together with specialists on spinal injuries, riders of all kinds and experts in materials and construction, we have come to the conclusion that many of the protectors on the market have serious weaknesses. The challenge is to come up with a flexible, comfortable protection that really does the job! Many back protectors out there are lightweight, but less good when it comes to shock absorption and really protecting your spinal area. The experience and knowledge we have gained from working with body armor for skiing can now be implemented into our bike products and we are very glad to present two different concepts of back protection, both as a result of different needs of riders and state of the art materials and constructions.
Our new VPD protector works progressively, adapts itself to the force of the impact and is the most flexible back protector out there.
Visco-Elastic Polymer Dough
POC uses a new compound and technology for our most shock-absorbing back protector called VP D (Visco-Elastic Polymer Dough). This protector is one of few on the market that reaches the highest standard (Level 2 “High performance”) of the CE 1621-2 motorcycle standard. The material is highly dampening, using a modified polyurethane foam that is soft, comfortable and adapts to create an individual fit for every user. However, when exposed to impact, the material stiffens and has an extreme absorption of energy. Most of the protector systems available on the market have a relatively static impact absorption curve and are designed to just pass the specific CE-Norm test. However, this means that low energy impacts are transferred almost directly to the body. Our VP D back protector functions pro-gressively and adapts itself to the force of the impact. to further improve properties, the back protector uses a dual density combination with extra protection covering the spinal area. This way we maximize both the freedom of movement and the shock absorbing characteristic of the protection. Multi impact hard shell system to maximize energy absorption POC’s back armor with hard panel shields has a layer of multi impact EPP. Unlike many other back protectors, EPP also withstands multi-impact without losing the energy absorbing abilities. The hard shield protector also has a height adjustable waistband system for the best personal fit.
An individual system
We have a flexible patented back protection system which allows you to choose your degree of protection from various components, at all times. This means you can tailor the degree of protection, depending on how you ride for the day or to meet different rules and restrictions applying to the competition you enter. With POC Back Protection System you can be sure to gain protection for the upper part of the spine, including vertebrae C1 – C7, as well as the lowest part including the caudal area. The uppermost part of the spine – the vertebrae C1 – C7, is the most important region to protect as damages here may result in serious irreparable injury or even death. The arm or is not only designed to give you the highest possible level of protection when riding. We have also done everything we can to make the armor as comfortable to wear as possible. You will feel how the protection anatomically and ergonomically follows the shape of your back. At the same time, the protection is supple, giving you complete freedom of movement. Another major advantage of the PO C armor is the highly efficient ventilation technology. To sum it all up, POC’s back protection will give you unsurpassed levels of comfort and safety. Looking at our range we hope that you will find a product for your personal need, regardless of how you like to ride, whether it be DH racing or pulling back flips in the park.

I’m very interested by the Joint VPD knee, although I find they lack pading on the sides (specially on the inside), I thought it was fixed for 2010 but I can’t see any differences on the pic here…

These guys are on the right track, really good innovative products, but i think 2nd generation could improve, I tried bone VPD legs and although very comfy and ergonomic i felt the dough part of the knee protector was really a bit insubstantial – and i got skinny knees! I wasn’t convinced the protection would be as good as the blurb and the overall bulk of the the pads suggested – so didn’t buy yet. Also the way the starps attach was fiddly but i guess this may be a case of getting used to.
And……what’s wrong with black.?!….i don’t want to look like a storm trooper!
